Professor Yusra Mouzughi - Vice-Chancellor

Professor Yusra Mouzughi is the Vice-Chancellor at Muscat University.  The Vice-Chancellor role involves creating the strategic vision and leading the team to achieve the objectives of Muscat University in a growing and fiercely competitive higher education landscape. 

Professor Mouzughi joined Muscat University as the inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic Affairs in 2016.  In 2018, she was promoted to the Vice Chancellor role whilst also temporarily maintaining the acting DVC Academic Affairs position.  Notably, she is also the first female head of a University in Oman. Under her leadership, Muscat University has grown in staff and student numbers, delivering the first cohorts of graduates, attracting research funding and strong industry collaborations.  As a new and young institution, Muscat University has quickly secured for itself a reputation for quality and rigour.

Professor Mouzughi is a highly motivated and innovative academic with over 18 years experience in the Higher Education sector and over 5 years industry experience in large blue chip organisations, with a proven track record of delivering to strategic objectives and a passion for providing a quality educational offering that is relevant to the workplace. She is a committed individual with a unique understanding of both Western and Arab cultures and an ability to motivate staff and students incorporating a deep understanding of the links between industry and academia coupled with a natural personal presence and an articulate approach to negotiation.

Professor Mouzughi is a member of the Oman Research Council (TRC) representing higher education institutions.  She is also an external reviewer for a number of quality assurance agencies including the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA), the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ).  Further, she is on the editorial board and a reviewer for several academic journals.

Prior to joining Muscat University, Professor Mouzughi worked for over 14 years in the UK higher education sector, and developed expertise in education management with a particular focus on Professional Doctorates.  She received her PhD in Knowledge Management from Liverpool John Moores University and her Masters from Heriot-Watt University.  She has developed a cross disciplinary research profile spanning knowledge sharing and the sustainability agenda.  Professor Mouzughi has since supervised many Doctoral theses in the broad management area, has numerous publications in the field and is an invited keynote speaker at many international conferences.  Prior to joining academia, she worked as a project manager in the financial services sector in the UK.

Dr. Suseela Balakrishnan - Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Journey

Dr. Suseela Balakrishnan joined Muscat University in October 2019 as the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Student Journey. She is responsible for the strategic direction and management of all the stages within the ‘student lifecycle’ that ensure students are placed at the centre of the University services and operations. The Student Journey Directorate plays a critical role in the overall student experience at the university; from the very first marketing and student recruitment efforts to engaging the students when they become alumni and ambassadors for the University. Within this directorate, Dr. Suseela oversees relevant departments related to Marketing and Communications, Student Recruitment and Admissions, Academic Registry, and all forms of Student Administrations, Support and Welfare.

Professionally, Dr. Suseela has been part of the education landscape for more than 20 years, having worked in various organizations and worn multiple senior leadership hats. Prior to joining Muscat University, she was the Head of Design, and Monitoring & Evaluation with LeapEd Services Ltd Pte (owned by Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of the Government of Malaysia), an organization that is spearheading nationwide education transformation in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Within this role, she was responsible for large scale impact studies, design of education transformation blueprints in line with global education needs as well as the creation and implementation of the company’s Innovation Pipeline. Prior to that, Dr. Suseela served as Chief Executive and Director of Academic Operations for INTI International College Kuala Lumpur (previously part of US based Laureate Education Group), where she led the start-up initiatives and growth of the organization focusing on the strategic planning, as well as management of overall operations and international partnerships.

A recipient of the prestigious ‘U.K Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship’, Dr. Suseela received her doctorate in Education from the University of Leeds in the area of Multiple Intelligences and Instructional Innovation. She is also a qualified Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist with a Pearson SRF ABDI Level 6 Professional Certificate in Human Capital Investment Planning. Dr. Suseela is a big proponent of “Education Done Right” and a firm believer of quality education that is relevant and empowering. She hopes that her professional philosophies and experience will enable her to successfully contribute to the vision, mission and growth of Muscat University.
